What Mood Disorders Are
Usually most people can control how they feel. If everything seems to be going your way and you’re in a pleasant frame of mind, you will most likely be in a joyous mood. If your tire goes flat on the way to work causing you to be late, circumstances could put a person in a pretty foul mood. Normal moods come and go. Moods change repeatedly depending on day to day life.
People that suffer from mood disorders feel like they are not in control anymore, instead of the in control feeling, they feel trapped no matter how hard they try to get out they remain trapped. This feeling of helplessness is what often leads to severe depression and possible thoughts of suicide. Mood disorders have two emotional states. Firstly there is elevated mood “mania,” this is a feeling of optimism and cheer. Secondly there is depressed mood, this is a feeling of sadness and dread. This type of mood disorder can cause a person unhealthy amounts of weight loss or gain, sleep troubles, and agitation to name a few symptoms.
It is possible to stop yourself from suffering from mood disorders. Having time for your own relaxation methods and doing recreational activities that bring yourself the feeling of joy will help. Try not to get yourself worked up over small things, the things that don’t really matter anyways can reduce your chances of having mood disorders. Also another step to prevent mood disorders is to keep your mind sharp and your body healthy. We live in a world that is rushed, complicated at times and a person just doesn’t know what will be thrown their way next. Don’t waste your time waiting for something to happen, just roll with it. Do take your life seriously, but you also need to live.
