How To Sell Internationally Through Your Site

Oct 27

It’s often during a downturn that business people realise they’ve got to branch out to get more clients. One easy source of new customers that you may not have considered before is to optimise your site for international visitors.Gaining international traffic this way could land you with plenty of new customers, and prove to bring in valuable revenue.

In the world today, there are now fewer native english speakers than non-native ones. Those are probably the most obvious customers to target first.

But there is a slight problem here – many of those who speak English as a non-native language are still learning. It might be slightly more difficult getting across your company’s message. Be sure to remove slang or jargon from your sales pages, and consider having them rewritten to suit an international audience.

One other idea is to create a site that’s tailored for one paticular culture. You could call sites like these ‘localized’ sites. Why not include some information on your company’s involvement with the country in question, or show some kind of cultural affinity.

Alternatively, you could go the whole hog and get your entire website translated into the target language. For this to succeed, every page will have to be translated, which is often a long, drawn out (not to say expensive) process.

A possible compromise is to translate just part of the website – the core, or most imortant parts.Alternatively, you could focus on a language-specific email marketing campaign that stays in touch with your international audience and at the same time addresses them in the language they find easiest to understand.
